A good solid, car, used over the past couple of years. Completely reliable until the last spell of extremely hot weather, when the gearbox played up after a slow, gruelling, low gear climb in traffic up a long, steep hill. It wouldn’t change up into 3rd gear smoothly without a long delay and some slippage. After a short rest to allow the car to cool down, it drove perfectly in 1st and 2nd gears but lost drive in 3rd gear. I nursed it home and paid for a specialist mobile diagnostic mechanic.
He found two faults – gear 2 and 3 ratios incorrect, torque converter clutch vibration. Apparently, this means that the clutch plates are worn or damaged and need replacing, probably following the extreme heat and major slippage on the hill.
I was told that this would cost £1,000/1,200 in a garage, including £350/400 for the parts.
This is something that I couldn’t tackle myself. Fortunately, we have another car to use going forward and decided to sell the Zafira as a project for someone able to carry out the work themselves.
